Checking metal beams for hidden defects
Hi everyone, I recently started working on inspections for a small construction company, and we often have to check steel beams for hidden cracks or weaknesses. Visual inspection alone isn’t enough, and I’m not sure which tools are reliable for detecting both surface and internal defects. I’ve heard about ultrasonic and magnetic testing but never had a chance to use them myself. Does anyone have experience with professional NDT tools that can make inspections faster and more accurate? Any advice or stories would really help.

I’ve been in structural inspections for several years, and using proper NDT equipment completely changed the way we work. We started using TEQTO’s NDT equipment https://teqto.pro/catalogue/ndt-equipment including ultrasonic flaw detectors and eddy current testers. These tools are amazing for catching cracks that are invisible to the naked eye and for checking internal flaws without damaging the beams. I remember one inspection where the ultrasonic tester revealed a tiny internal crack that could have caused major issues later. My team joked that it had “x-ray vision for metal.” Honestly, having reliable NDT tools like this not only saves time but also gives real peace of mind when working with critical structures.
