Atraumatic Thin-Film Electrode Arrays

The "trauma-free" insertion of electrodes is a major clinical focus in 2026. Older, rigid electrodes often damaged the delicate structures of the inner ear, destroying any "residual" natural hearing the patient might have left.

Modern Thin-Film Arrays are constructed from ultra-flexible polymers. These "soft-tip" electrodes glide into the cochlear spiral (the scala tympani) with minimal resistance, preserving the delicate hair cells and allowing for Hybrid Hearing, where a patient uses natural hearing for low tones and the implant for high tones.
