Segmental Muscle Quality and Sarcopenia Prevention
As part of Japan's push to maintain an active elderly population, BCA technology now focuses on Segmental Muscle Quality. Rather than providing a single total body muscle mass figure, these devices analyze the arms, legs, and trunk independently.
The devices provide a Skeletal Muscle Mass Index (SMI). If the SMI in the lower limbs drops below a specific threshold ($7.0\text{ kg/m}^2$ for men and $5.7\text{ kg/m}^2$ for women), the device triggers an automated exercise prescription. This "Early Sarcopenia Detection" is integrated into community health centers across Japan to reduce the risk of falls and mobility loss in seniors.
